| Although more than a year has passed since the devastating destruction of the hurricanes of 2005, there is still much work to be done in the Gulf Coast region. That’s why United Way is mobilizing the caring power of young people from across the country to join us for ASB ’07. |
| Last spring we sent almost 100 young people from every state in the country to regions devastated by Hurricane Katrina as a part of STORM CORPS. Over the course of their Spring Break, these young people spent a week rebuilding homes and restoring hope to communities in desperate need of assistance. |

But experts say it will take years - if not decades - to help residents recover and rebuild broken lives and shattered dreams. And because there's so much need - and so many good people - United Way is sending several hundred young people to be a part of the long-term recovery efforts in the Gulf Coast.

In 2005, while serving as a refuge for tens of thousands of Hurricane Katrina evacuees, Southwest Louisiana needed to prepare for its own disaster – Hurricane Rita. The third most destructive natural disaster in the history of the United States, Hurricane Rita wiped out communities and destroyed homes throughout the region.
Volunteers from across the country will be traveling to the Lake Charles, LA region to engage in such service projects as:
- Replace roofs on some of the more than 1,700 homes that still have “blue roofs,” a temporary fix to keep homes from further damage
- Repair homes that were heavily damaged by the hurricane
- Rehabilitate an environmental education camp and its nature trail
