Merrill Lynch Responds to Katrina

Helping Communities Recover, Helping Communities Thrive. When Merrill Lynch and their employees saw the devastation of last year´s hurricanes, they put their principal of Responsible Citizenship into action. Merrill Lynch recognized two things. First, the victims of the hurricanes needed their help. Second, the communities who rely on their investment in United Way will continue to need their support as well. Immediately, Merrill Lynch worked with United Way to launch a special fundraising drive in response to the hurricanes. Merrill Lynch asked its employees to give over and beyond their traditional investment in United Way to help the victims of the hurricanes, and the company agreed to match every dollar contributed by employees in support of hurricane efforts. As a result Merrill Lynch and employees gave $3.2 million dollars to hurricane efforts, with $2 million going directly to the United Way Hurricane Response and Recovery Fund.

Merrill Lynch did not stop there. They went on to run the most successful United Way campaign in their company´s history. Employees increased their contributions from $9.2 million to $10.2 million. "As always the people of Merrill Lynch rose to the occasion," said Greg Fleming, president of Merrill Lynch´s Global Markets and Investment Banking group and 2005 campaign chairman. "Not only did we exceed our campaign goals, but we raised the highest levels of funds in our firm's history. These are incredible results."

On behalf of people across the nation whose lives will improve because of this great work ? United Way extends its sincere appreciation to Merrill Lynch, Merrill Lynch employees and everyone who went over and beyond to help in challenging times.
