United Way Alternative Spring Break 2007

United Way’s second year of sending young people from across the country to volunteer during their spring break in the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast was a raging success. More than 300 volunteers donated more than 12,000 hours of volunteer service. Nails were hammered, roofs were laid, friends were made and communities and lives were improved. That’s what matters.

NCL employees lead the way
Employees from National Corporate Leaders, FedEx, Best Buy, UPS, Home Depot, Target, Walgreens and Deere & Co participated in United Way Alternative Spring Break (ASB). Click here to read their inspiring stories.

ASB in the newsUnited Way Alternative Spring Break (ASB) was a huge hit, not only with participants and the Southwest Louisiana community, but also with the media. Click here to check out some of these great stories from across the country.

An interactive impact
– The young people at ASB proved they truly are part of a connected generation. Throughout ASB, participants constantly posted stories to the ASB Blog, Facebook.com and other social networking sites, shared slideshows and videos through the web and uploaded pictures to the ASB picture site. United Way hits SNL!

Those who don’t spend Saturday nights watching TV may have missed the March 24, 2007 Saturday Night Live sketch featuring guest host Peyton Manning in a United Way “Lend a Hand” campaign spoof. For the second year in a row, FedEx was the lead sponsor for United Way Alternative Spring Break. Although they more than doubled their 2006 contribution, FedEx was much more than just a monetary sponsor. From setting up the FedEx Internet Café where ASB participants sent emails home, blogged about their experience and uploaded pictures to share with friends, to the FedEx Special Delivery truck bringing lunches out to ASB worksites, FedEx was an invaluable hands-on partner. Thank you FedEx, for doing what matters.

I recently had one of the most incredible weeks of my life – United Way Alternative Spring Break (ASB) 2007. Little did I know that my first post-college spring break would not only be the best spring break I’ve ever had, but a truly inspiring and life-changing week. I learned tons about youth engagement, United Way, volunteerism and so much more during my week as an ASB Team Leader. Click here to read more about my ASB experience.
