Community Involvement Survey Results
In a nationwide survey that was the first step in a program designed to strengthen America's communities through greater citizen involvement, United Way of America found that almost all Americans have a genuine desire to become more active in their communities, but find it is difficult to take part, given the demands of their work. United Way of America today released the findings of its Community Involvement Survey, conducted in August 2002 through interviews with more than 2,000 individuals throughout the country � a sample representative of the nation.

United Way Generates $5 Billion in Resources for Nation's Communities
United Way of America announced today that in 2001-2002 United Ways across the nation generated an estimated $5 billion to help America's communities address their most critical issues. This represents an increase of 6.8% from $4.7 billion in 2000. Generous gifts to the September 11th Fund were the predominant driver of this growth. The resources raised include the annual campaign at $3.95 billion, representing a 0.9% increase over last year's campaign and revenue beyond the campaign (e.g. government grants, gifts to initiatives) at $212 million, compared to $191.5 million in 2000.

Brian Gallagher, President and CEO of United Way of America, joined supporters of the Charity,
Aid, Recovery, and Empowerment (CARE) Act of 2002 to highlight the important role the legislation could play in strengthening communities. �United Ways rely on over 17 million donors to help fulfill our mission to mobilize the caring power of communities,� Gallagher said at a press conference on the bill today, �But the generosity of our citizens alone is not enough. It takes the resources of our federal and state partners coupled with philanthropic dollars to achieve true impact in a community.�
