Lionel Richie Announces Coming Home Tour

Major Non-Profit Organizations Release Findings of Listening Tour Designed to Assess the Human Needs of Gulf Coast Recovery
To follow up a commitment announced in January 2006 in New Orleans, Leadership 18 today released the findings of a listening tour conducted throughout the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of the 2005 hurricane season. The listening tour was designed to hear the needs and priorities of those who were most impacted by the storms.

United Way Honors Congressman Mike Bilirakis (R-FL) as "Federal Partner of the Year"
More than 100 people from the Tampa Bay, Florida area gathered Monday to honor Congressman Mike Bilirakis (R-FL) at an event where United Way of America presented Rep. Bilirakis with its �Federal Partner of the Year' award. Congressman Bilirakis was nominated for this award by Susan Arnett, President and CEO, United Way of Pasco County (Florida) for his support of the "Calling for 2-1-1" bill (HR 896) currently pending in Congress.

United Way Calls Congressional Passage of Charity Legislation
United Way of America today welcomed final passage of a package of charitable incentives and reforms by Congress. The provisions were included in a bill principally devoted to pension issues (HR 4), which the Senate passed late in the evening on August 3 by a vote of 93-5.

Louisiana Artist George Rodrigue Donates
In an effort to focus national attention on the need to develop and fund a consistent three-digit dialing system nationwide that provides community, volunteer and human service information and referral - particularly in light of significant natural disasters and devastating events such as last year's Gulf Coast hurricanes - Louisiana Artist George Rodrigue created and donated an image of his well-known "Blue Dog" mired in red tape to be used to represent the need for 2-1-1. Ken Harvey Book Signing
Retired Washington Redskins football player and children's book author, Ken Harvey, held a book signing for children of the Patrick Henry Elementary School in Alexandria, Virginia on April 6. Students also decorated bookmarks to accompany the donation of Mr. Harvey's books to the Gulf Coast recovery efforts. Mr. Harvey read from his collection entitled "Life in the Fridge." His book selections included "When Chocolate Milk Moved In" and "The Eggster Story."

George Clooney Oscar Bag Auction
The online auction of the Academy Awards® Gift Bag received by George Clooney at this year's Oscar Awards ceremony, which the Oscar-winning actor/producer/director and member of United Way of America's Board of Trustees generously donated to United Way to support hurricane response and recovery efforts, resulted in a winning bid of $45,100. As a member of the Board of Trustees of United Way of America, Mr. Clooney has been a generous supporter of United Way's efforts to rebuild lives and communities devastated by the 2005 hurricanes. By auctioning the gift bag, United Way and Mr. Clooney hope to continue to focus attention on the long-term needs of the Gulf Coast areas devastated by the 2005 hurricane season as well as raise funds for ongoing rebuilding and recovery efforts.

The Spirit of America® Awards program is United Way's highest tribute for corporate community involvement. Spirit of America and Summit Award recipients are judged on detailed criteria in four categories: Employee Community Investment, Corporate Community Investment, Community Leadership and Employee Community Engagement. The Spirit of America winner excels in each of these four categories. Summit Awards are presented to companies that excel in one or more of these areas.
