United Way Tocqueville Society

Portrait of Alexis de Tocqueville
The United Way Tocqueville Society, initiated in March, 1984, is designed to deepen the understanding, commitment and support of individuals to United Ways and to recognize the deep commitment to service. Membership in the Society is granted to individuals who contribute at least $10,000 annually to the United Way which includes most major United Ways. Thank you to all of these individuals who have made such a difference in their local community!

Specific objectives of the program are to:

  • Save and change lives throughout the nation through philanthropic leadership.
  • Enhance local recognition of long-standing service volunteers in ways that foster voluntary community service.
  • Expand high-level personal giving and major giving programs with high standards.
  • Build local/national linkages to enhance and strengthen local leadership development and major giving efforts.
  • Use the Tocqueville Society's name and prominence to stimulate ideas in ways that maintain the national quality image that United Way of America has created for it.

Currently there are over 398 local Tocqueville Societies in communities across the United States. Last year 398 societies raised over $400 million from over 20,111 individuals nationwide. To become a member of the Tocqueville Society, the local United Way needs to contact United Way of America to participate in the program. Please contact your local United Way to see whether a local society exists in your community and for specifics of your local society.
